This post is all about the summer makeup routine that lets your skin breathe.

There was a summer a few years back (before kids) when I was either full-glam or nothing. Foundation, some concealer, setting powder, the whole thing — in the summer heat. By 10 am, I looked like I had just come in from a run. My foundation was melting off, my T-zone was oily, and I was touching up all the time. It was just too much.
Here's what nobody really talks about: summer makeup doesn't have to be less; it just has to be different. And for me, that came when I stopped trying to cover my skin and started actually taking care of it first.
If you've got combination skin like me, you already know that summer is its own kind of chaos. The dry patches get drier from the AC, the oily zones get shinier from heat, and most full-coverage foundations just don't survive the heat and humidity. I completely changed my approach, and honestly, I love my summer routine now way more than my winter one.
Start With Skin You Actually Want to Show

This is the whole philosophy behind skin-first summer makeup routine: if your skin is healthy and hydrated, you don't need to hide it.
I know that sounds simple, but it took me a while to actually get here. I used to pile on makeup to cover up dryness, uneven texture, and a few breakouts here and there, without addressing any of the actual causes. Once I cleaned up my skincare routine, I realized I needed a lot less makeup to feel confident.
For the last couple of years, I've been loving Barefaced products, and they've genuinely changed the way my skin looks, which is great going into summer. My morning routine is super quick — toning pads, vitamin C serum, overachiever serum, and SPF — and that's it before makeup. Their approach is simple: support your skin barrier, don't strip it. Which is exactly what combination skin needs. I'm not dealing with any flaky patches I used to get, and my oily zones are way more balanced. My skin has honestly never looked better. I love using quality products that actually work, and I’m also all about using products that are inexpensive and improve my skin.
So at night, I always double cleanse, use witch hazel for my toner, jojoba oil for moisturizer, and retinol (when I'm not pregnant, of course). The witch hazel keeps things balanced without over-drying, and the jojoba oil is one of those underrated gems for combination skin — non-comedogenic, and it actually helps regulate oil production over time. It sounds counterintuitive to put oil on oily skin, but it really works!
In the morning, I rinse with just water and go straight into my Barefaced routine. That's it. No heavy moisturizer stacked under my makeup, no layering a million things. Just good skincare doing its job overnight, so my skin shows up ready.
When your skin is in a good place, summer makeup becomes so much easier. You're not filling in cracks, you're not trying to blur texture — you're just enhancing what's already there.
The Products I Actually Use (Summer Edition)

Let's get into the specifics, because I know that's what you're here for!
- A Foundation/Concealer Stick For Quick, Easy Coverage. I've been loving the Merit foundation and concealer stick and the Bob Beauté corrector stick — both are lightweight, blendable, and don't feel heavy on your skin. I use it like a skin tint, almost, buffing it out lightly for overall coverage, then a little extra where I actually need more coverage. No separate foundation step, no extra tools required. Just the stick, a brush, and done.
- Spot Conceal Only Where You Need It. On top of that base, I'll apply a little extra from the foundation/concealer stick to cover any blemishes — but I keep it as minimal as possible. Less product means less melting. In the summer, you could skip setting powder almost entirely and just let it wear naturally. I've recently been loving the Bob Beaute light bronzer as a dusting all over, like a light setting powder, but it gives a really pretty glow.
- Cream Blush. Cream blush blends into the skin naturally instead of sitting on top of it, which makes it way more sweat-proof than you'd think. A little goes a long way, and it gives you that flushed, just-came-in-from-outside glow that feels very summer.
- Bronzer For Warmth, Or Contour. The Bob Beauté bronzer has been my summer staple. A little on the cheekbones, forehead, and nose, and your whole face looks like you've been outside all week. It adds a glowy warmth without looking muddy or heavy, which is exactly what I want in the summer.
- Brows, Mascara, And Done. I skip eyeshadow on regular days in the summer. I fill in the sparse areas of my eyebrows with NYX Lift & Snatch and apply a clear brow gel over the top. Mascara alone is surprisingly impactful when the rest of your face looks fresh and healthy.
- A Face Mist To Set Everything. This is the finishing step that ties it all together. I personally have been really loving the Bob Beauté face mist because it keeps that skin-like glowy finish without going flat or powdery, and honestly, it just feels amazing on a hot summer day.
What I Stopped Doing In My Summer Makeup Routine (And Don't Miss)

This might be the most useful part of this post, actually.
- I Stopped Over-Exfoliating. This was a big one for me. I thought exfoliating more would help my skin look smoother and healthier, but all it did was disrupt my skin barrier and make everything more reactive. Now I exfoliate lightly with the toning pads daily, and that's about it. My skin is calmer, happier, and my makeup sits so much better.
- I Stopped Using Heavy Setting Powder All Over My Face. I used to dust powder everywhere, and in the summer, it just looked heavy and made me look older (in a bad way). I barely use powder anymore, and my skin looks so much more alive and youthful.
- I Stopped Doing Full Glam On Regular Days. Honestly, because kids. I used to think I needed to look put-together in a very specific, high-effort way to be seen in public or to feel good about myself. But that was a lot of pressure to put on my appearance every morning. Now my summer makeup takes less than 10 minutes, and I feel more like me than I did with a full face on.
My Actual Morning Routine (10 Minutes or Less)
For the days when you just want to know what to actually do:
- Rinse face with water
- Barefaced toning pads
- Barefaced vitamin C serum
- Barefaced overachiever
- Barefaced SPF
- Merit or Bob Beauté concealer stick, buffed out lightly
- Extra foundation/concealer stick on blemishes if needed
- Cream blush
- Bob Beauté bronzer
- Mascara
- Bob Beauté face mist
That's it. Your skin gets to show through, the formula is light enough to survive heat and humidity, and you're not spending 45 minutes in front of the mirror.
Summer Makeup Routine: The Bottom Line

Your summer makeup routine doesn't have to take forever. When you start with healthy skin, and I mean actually investing in your skincare routine, not just layering more products on top of problems, you need so much less to look good.
For me, that meant switching to Barefaced, ditching the over-exfoliation habit, and learning to work with my combination skin instead of against it. The makeup part got easy once the skincare part clicked.
This summer, try giving your skin a little room to breathe. You might be surprised at how much you actually like what's underneath.
