This post is all about easy summer makeup essentials for a glowy makeup look.
I have spent way too many summers doing full-glam makeup (before kids, of course), only to look in the mirror by afternoon and wonder why I even bothered. Hot summer days are not always kind to a full face of makeup. And I'm guessing wherever you are, summer heat has done the same thing to you at least once.
But I've learned the secret to glowy summer makeup isn't a special technique or expensive products. It's actually fewer products, chosen really intentionally. When you strip your routine down to the essentials, the ones that work with your skin instead of against it, that's when you get the youthful glow everyone's always chasing.
So here are the 7 summer makeup essentials I use, plus a few things I ditched that were making everything harder than it needed to be.
(And if you want the full philosophy behind my skin-first approach to summer makeup, this post goes deeper on that.)
#1. Good Skincare First (This Is the Real Summer Makeup Essential)
I know this isn't a makeup product, but this is important because skipping this step is why a lot of summer makeup routines fall flat.
My morning routine before any makeup is just: rinse with water, Barefaced toning pads, vitamin C serum, overachiever, and SPF. That's it. No heavy moisturizer stacked underneath, no extra layers. Just a solid, simple routine that keeps my skin balanced and prepped.
At night, I always double cleanse, use witch hazel as my toner, jojoba oil for my moisturizer, and retinol (when I'm not pregnant). The overnight work is what shows up on your face in the morning. When your skin barrier is healthy, and your skin is actually hydrated from good overnight care, your makeup just looks different, more like skin, and less like a bunch of products.
Barefaced has been my go-to for years, and it's made the biggest difference in how my skin looks, and my summer makeup just looks so much better!
#2. A Foundation/Concealer Stick
The single biggest switch I made for summer was dropping foundation and switching to a foundation/concealer stick used lightly all over. I love the Merit one and the Bob Beauté one — both are lightweight, easy to blend out, and don't budge in heat the way heavy foundation does.
The trick is using it like a skin tint rather than a concealer. Buff it out lightly across your whole face for light coverage, then add a touch more only where you actually need a bit more coverage, like under the eyes, or on any blemishes. You get the coverage without the weight, and your skin still looks like skin underneath it.
If you don’t want to use a brush, you can use your fingers if you want! No separate foundation step. Just the stick and your tool of choice — which, as a mom, is honestly the only kind of routine I have time for.
#3. Cream Blush
If you're still using powder blush in the summer, this is your sign to make the switch. Cream blush blends directly into your skin instead of sitting on top of it, which means it lasts longer in the heat and humidity than you'd expect. It also does a lot of the heavy lifting for that glowy look; it adds color, a little sheen, and warmth all in one step.
Apply it on the apples of your cheeks, and blend upward toward your temples. You can also tap a tiny bit onto the bridge of your nose for a sun-kissed effect, which I love doing!
This is one of those products that just feels like summer. The glow it gives is the kind no highlighter can replicate; it looks like it's coming from inside your skin.
#4. A Bronzer That Adds Warmth Without Weight
A good bronzer is what takes a simple summer makeup look from "I put on a few things on" to "I look like I've been living my best life outside." The Bob Beauté bronzer has been one of my top summer makeup essentials; it adds a beautiful glow without looking orange or sitting heavy on the skin.
I dust it on my cheekbones, across my forehead, and the bridge of my nose. It ties the whole face together and gives you that sun-kissed look that pairs perfectly with the dewy, glowy base.
If you're going to add one extra step to your summer routine, this is the one.
#5. Brow Gel
Low-maintenance brows are a non-negotiable for me in the summer. A brow gel takes 30 seconds, keeps everything in place even in heat, and frames your whole face without any extra effort. I personally like to fill in any sparse areas with the NYX Lift & Snatch pen, but this is an extra, totally optional step.
It's one of those products that looks like you did more than you did, which is my favorite kind of product as a busy mom.
#6. Mascara
In the summer, I skip eyeshadow on most days and just apply a little bronzer in its place. A coat or two of mascara on its own is surprisingly impactful when the rest of your face looks fresh and glowy because it opens up your eyes and makes you look awake without adding any complexity to your routine.
Waterproof formula is worth it in the summer, especially if you're sweating or at the pool. Just use a gentle oil-based remover so you're not tugging at your eyelashes at the end of the day.
#7. A Good Face Mist
Last step, and it's a good one. I really love the Bob Beauté face mist because it sets everything without making your skin look flat or powdery, which is the enemy of glowy summer makeup. It actually gives a fresh, glowy, skin-like finish and really just feels incredible on a hot day.
This is what I use instead of a setting powder. A few spritzes, and you're done. No powder, no mess, no dulling out all the work you just did.
The Summer Makeup Essentials, Simplified
In case you want it all in one place:
- Barefaced skincare (toning pads, vitamin C, serum, SPF)
- Merit or Bob Beauté corrector stick
- Cream blush
- Bob Beauté bronzer
- Clear or Tinted brow gel
- Mascara (waterproof)
- Bob Beauté face mist
Seven steps. Ten minutes. Glowy, breathable, summer-proof makeup.
Summer Makeup Essentials: One More Thing
The products matter, but so does what's happening underneath them. I've noticed the biggest difference in my glowy summer makeup since I cleaned up my skincare routine, specifically since I started using Barefaced and stopped over-exfoliating my skin. Healthy skin reflects light differently than stressed-out skin, and no highlighter or luminous formula can replicate that.
If your summer makeup isn't doing what you want it to, it might be worth looking at your skincare first. This post is all about my skin-first approach, if you want to dig into that.
But if you just needed a simple, practical list of what to actually buy and use this summer, I hope this was it!
