I used to think I could outrun a bad diet.

Literally.

For years, I'd put on my running shoes with one goal: burn off whatever I ate. Pasta last night? Add an extra mile. Had some dessert? Let's make it a long run. 

I love running, and I also really love food. So I just thought that I could eat whatever I wanted and then “burn it off” the next day. Which kind of sounds like I treated exercise like a punishment for enjoying food, doesn’t it? I was stuck in this hamster wheel of "burn, burn, burn" and wondering why I never felt strong, energized, or satisfied with how I looked.

Then one day, it clicked.

My husband decided to try the carnivore diet. Initially, I thought, that doesn’t sound healthy at all! But at the time, I was pregnant and having a hard time eating anything. I was also really tired. So I just made the steak for dinner. 

Now, I wasn’t following it strictly like he was, but I just remember, in that moment, was when this simple truth finally landed in my brain: It doesn't matter what kind of workout I do if I'm not paying attention to what I'm actually eating.

I'd heard the stats before. You know the ones. "Abs are made in the kitchen." "Fitness is 80% nutrition." I'd agree and then go right back to my burn-it-off mentality. But that day, something just clicked. I stopped seeing food as the enemy I needed to outrun and started seeing it as the fuel that could actually build the body and energy I wanted.

That mindset shift changed everything. Not just my workouts, but my skin, my sleep, my mood, my entire daily rhythm.

#1. Build Before You Burn

I love running. I still do it. But I spent years prioritizing cardio over strength training because I thought "burning calories" was the goal. What I didn't realize is that muscle is a metabolically active tissue. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. Not on a treadmill. At rest. Sitting on your couch. Sleeping.

When I shifted my focus from burning to building, I stopped feeling like I was fighting my body and started feeling like I was working with it.

The habit: Aim for at least 2-3 strength training sessions per week. You don't need a gym membership or fancy equipment. Dumbbells, resistance bands, or even bodyweight exercises work. The key is consistency, not intensity. Start where you are.

I thought I ate "healthy." Salads, smoothies, and vegetables. And I thought I was getting enough protein, but when I actually tracked my protein intake for a couple of days, I wasn't getting nearly as much as I thought, barely hitting what my body needed to support muscle recovery, hormone balance, and sustained energy.

I believe we're each given one body, and caring for it well is an act of stewardship. Not punishment. Not perfection. Just daily taking care of what you’ve been given. Some days, that looks like a great workout and a nourishing meal. Other days, it looks like rest and a deep breath. Both count.

The habit: When you miss a workout or eat something "off plan," skip the guilt spiral. Just ask yourself: What's the next kind choice I can make for my body? Then do that.

The Skin Connection You Didn't Expect

Here's something I've noticed as an esthetician: the best health tips aren't about products.

Chronic dehydration shows up as dullness and fine lines. Poor digestion triggers breakouts and inflammation. Lack of sleep accelerates aging. High stress disrupts your skin barrier.

Your skin is a mirror. It reflects what's happening inside. So while a good skincare routine matters (and I'll always stand by that), the foundation is built with these daily habits. Hydration. Nutrition. Movement. Rest. Grace.
